CHANGES TO POWERBOAT LICENSES

From June 1st 2009 major reforms to licensing requirements will come into effect. Anyone wishing to acquire a powerboat licence will now need to log practical on water experience under the supervision of an experienced skipper similarly to motor vehicle licensing requirements. Powerboat skippers intending to allow family members to drive their vessel need to be aware of these new regulations.

To gain a powerboat Licence you need to:

  • Log the required practice hours
  • Complete the Boating Safety Course
  • Pass a theory test at a NSW Maritime office

NEW STANDARDS FOR DISTRESS BEACONS (EPIRBS)

As of February 1 satellites monitoring 121.5 MHz distress beacons have been shut down. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) reports that it no longer has the ability to detect analogue distress beacons via satellite.

AMSA is stressing the urgent need for boaters to upgrade to 406 MHz distress beacons immediately to ensure on water safety. When upgrading be sure to purchase a distress beacon that complies with all current standards and ensure that your old analogue model is disposed of correctly – Battery World outlets provide free disposal.

It is also necessary to register all 406MHz beacons with AMSA; registration is free and can be done on-line at the AMSA website.
