Today (Saturday, 28th April 2018) was Day 1 of the Newcastle Youth Keelboat Championships. With six teams of young sailors competiting representing five different local Clubs, we were bound to see some excitement on the water today!
The action began early with gusty, shifting breeze presenting a challenging race course to all competitors. Regatta Coach Nina Long summed up the day as “…It was a challenging raceday, but all teams showcased their ability to sail smart and make the boat go fast.” Being available to all teams, Nina was on the course all day long helping competitors build their teamwork and boat handling skills, and how to sail the Club’s fleet of Force 24 inshore keelboats FAST!!
Tomorrow offers to be a similar day to today with moderate S-SE winds forecast to provide another glamourous day of racing on the Harbour.
“The Newcastle Youth Keelboat Regatta is a great introduction to keelboat racing for young sailors. We give them one of our yachts to take out and race against their peers from other local Club – building new skills and new friendships over the course of the two day regatta. We hope to see some of these capable young sailors continue on with us by enrolling into our Youth Development Program which will see NCYC teams train to compete at our rival Sydney based Clubs!” – Jack Buchan, NCYC Sailing Manager.
With just one day of racing remaining, competitors will be eager to learn exactly what is populating the prize table, with event sponsor Gill Australiacoming on board with apparrel and online store incentives for our podium place getters.
