Kids Learn to Sail

Learning to sail is one of the most satisfying and fulfilling activities a child can do. Sailing is such an incredibly versatile sport, it can be enjoyed by young and old, at adrenalin pumping levels through racing or as an avenue to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon.

. . . . and it can all start right here!Tackers logo

The Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is proud to introduce the nationally accredited “Tackers” junior sailing program for kids by Australian Sailing, the peak body for the sport in Australia.

The Tackers program offers children aged from 7-12 years sequential skill and knowledge development through three main courses/levels each involving 20 hours of tuition.

TACKERSTackers 1 – Having FunTackers

Tackers 2 – Tricks & Techniques

Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast!

The program has been specifically designed to keep children engaged with short but interesting activities where kids have fun whilst learning solid sailing skills and habits without even noticing!

All Tackers courses are delivered by NCYC Instructors who are Australian Sailing qualified and accredited.  They are aided by qualified Assistant Instructors who are often young sailors who still race their own dinghies on weekends.

NCYC Sailing Academy Manager says the program offers the opportunity for primary aged children to experience the fun of sailing in a safe and nurturing environment.

“We hold the program in the safe sheltered waters of the upper Harbour and under the supervision of professional qualified sailing instructors.”

“The Tackers program allows all children the chance to try sailing regardless of whether they have ever had any experience in sailing or not”

“Sailing is a fabulous sport that is genuinely a whole lot of fun. I began sailing as a kid myself and it has quite literally changed my life.  Apart from being a healthy outdoor experience, it is a sport where you get to meet new friends and learn new skills.”

“I highly recommend this fun experience.”

At NCYC we do not limit the number of times a child completes a course level, in fact we encourage children to spend as much time as they need at each level rather than just the minimum 20 hours prescribed. We recognise that some children take a bit longer to gain confidence or to learn certain skills and we can work to accommodate that.  It can take several sailing seasons to complete all three levels of Tackers.

NCYC run Tackers over an 8-week block during the school term either as an after-school activity on a Wednesday or as a weekend morning activity on Saturday or Sunday (dependent on the season). We also offer the program as a 5 day block during the January school holiday break.

Tackers programs are limited to 24 kids in Level 1 and only 12 kids in Level’s 2 & 3 – this means places fill quickly. We endeavour to set our course dates well in advance so parents can book their children in early so as to avoid disappointment.

The course fee includes 20hours of instruction, the use of our Tackers OziOpti boats and equipment, we provide a life jacket for the children to wear during the course, the kids take home weekly activity sheets and we celebrate with a BBQ sausage sizzle and certificate presentation at course completion.

Why not come and join us at the NCYC for some fun sailing on the Harbour . . .
