Volunteering @ NCYC

NEW On-line Volunteer Roster

Volunteering is integral to the provision of sailing services to NCYC’s members and the broader sailing community.

It is also a great way to stay active, meet new people and get out on the water.

NCYC is always looking for Club Members and potential Members who are interested in volunteering at NCYC in the following roles:

    • Starters / Race Officers / Race Assistants – Keel boats / Force 24s / Lasers.
    • Mark Layers – Keel boats / Force 24s / Lasers.
    • Rescue / Support Boat Drivers – Force 24s / Lasers.
    • Events Helpers – All sorts of sailing related events / BBQs etc.

Each volunteer task requires specific skills and varying levels of fitness / mobility.  Training and ‘try-outs’ are available for those interested. Volunteering is a really important part of NCYC’s ‘Club Culture’ and volunteers are rewarded for their hard work on a regular basis. Further, volunteering is a great way to be physically active and to get out on the water.

Please contact the Club on 4940 8188 or go to for more info.

  • Sub-Committee Representation

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have any prior sailing experience or training?

All the necessary equipment and specific training is provided  –  all you need is the desire to assist, while achieving your personal goals. You do not need to have any prior experience in sailing, although experience, a boat licence and some sailing/boating knowledge and experience is always helpful.

What level of commitment is required?

Volunteering at the NCYC is flexible and although some level of regular commitment is expected reliability is more important. For example, a volunteer could be involved with club racing every week, and/or choose to participate only in large regatta events when required.

What happens once I become a volunteer?

Once you register your interest with NCYC, the Club’s volunteer co-ordinator will invite you to come along to a club sailing event, on a day that suits you. You will be given the opportunity to go out on the water on either the Start or Finish boat for the entire race, which could be up to approximately five hours, or partake in on-shore duties if that is your preference. We will ensure you are paired with a senior volunteer who can explain your role and ‘show you the ropes’, while answering any questions you may have. Once you are sure you would like to join us, we will collect your contact details, organise for you to become member of the Club and you will become part of our volunteer team.

You will then have access to any necessary training to assist you with your volunteer activities.

Our volunteers have a great sense of camaraderie, and NCYC aims to maintain this by encouraging everyone to work together as a team. Our volunteer team enjoys a great social atmosphere, with post-race get togethers.

What does it cost?

You will be a valued member of a growing team of volunteers at NCYC who provide essential services to the Club.  As a member based organisation we expect all our volunteers (and sailors) to become at least Crew Members ($146 pa) of the Club.

The ‘payback’ for volunteering is significant with volunteers provided with ‘NCYC volunteer crew gear’, lunches and NCYC dollars to spend in the Club as a way of acknowledgement for their commitment. In addition, volunteering is a great way to meet new people and get out on the water and learn some great skills.

How do I find out more?

Please contact NCYC on 02 4940 8188 to discuss current volunteering opportunities at the Club.
