In the Beginning
Australia Day Cup
The first sailing trophy from the beginning of our official sailing was the Australia Day Cup donated by Queens Wharf Brewery (Ian Burford). This was for NCYC’s first Australia Day Race on 26th January 2004.
NCYC has not established our sailing program at the time, as the Sailing Committee was ust being established. As a result there was only one pursuit race and it was open to all comers.
Race organisers were Ernie Thirkell and Bruce Bragg. Tony Lobb was principal race officer. Warren (Wally) Amos donated the use of his game fishing boat “Ovuka” as the committee vessel and “Ovuka” also formed one end of the start/finish lines.
Presentation was at the Brewery with Tom Michilis declared the winner in his Laser “Fast Eddy”.
This trophy became the CAT 4 PHS Div 1 in subsequent years.
Tenacity Award was to be a light-hearted recognition of effort, determination and dedication to task. The parameters for selection covered anything from the frivolous, through to some so serious as to be inspirational. They are all there if you read the “Why” behind the names on the Tenacity Award. The Tenacity Award was first awarded after the Wednesday Sweepstakes Race on 6 October 2004. This was one of the light hearted fun occasions in our first year of sanctioned racing at NCYC.
