At the NCYC Sailing Academy, Instructors work under the supervision of a Tackers Leader within the Tackers kids learn-to-sail program.
Instructors may instruct from the shore, from a small RIB/tinny and on occasion may sail on a Tackers dinghy with a course participant. All instructors assist with setting up equipment, rigging boats, cleaning & maintaining gear and packing away at the end of a session. Tackers Leaders continuously offer further on-the-job training to help develop skills, knowledge and instructing techniques. Dinghy Instructors also work with & direct the activities of Assistant Instructors.
Dinghy Instructors are used within the Tackers dinghy program which operates on Wednesday afternoons from 3:45pm to 6:15pm and on Saturday mornings from 9:00am to 11:30am. The Tackers program runs for a full school term (10 weeks) and Instructors are generally rostered for the full program (Terms 1 and 4). We also run the program as week long blocks (5 days) in the October and January school holidays. Instructors are required to attend work 30minutes before a session starts and finish 30minutes after a session is finished to assist with set-up and pack-up. On occasion there are additional work opportunities for events such as “Try Sailing” days, scout/cubs sailing sessions and promotional days. Instructors are advised of these opportunities and rostered according to availability.
We also like to encourage our Dinghy Instructors to gain their Keelboat Instructor qualifications, and we offer opportunities to gain further experience on our inshore keelboats to assist in this process.
