The Tackers program offers children, in a general age range of 7-12 years, sequential sailing skill & knowledge development through three main courses/levels each involving a minimum of 20 hours tuition.
The boats used are specifically designed to suit children and help them learn quickly & confidently.

The Tackers program has been specifically designed to keep children engaged with short but interesting activities where kids have fun whilst learning fundamental sailing skills and habits without even noticing!
All Tackers courses are delivered by NCYC Instructors who are Australian Sailing qualified and accredited. They are aided by qualified Assistant Instructors who are often young sailors who still race their own dinghies on weekends.
The Sailing Academy Manager says the program offers the opportunity for primary aged children to experience the fun of sailing in a safe and nurturing environment.

We do not limit the number of times a child completes a course level, in fact we encourage children to spend as much time as they need at each level rather than just the minimum 20 hours prescribed. We recognise that some children take a bit longer to gain confidence or to learn certain skills and we can work to accommodate that. It may take several sailing seasons to complete all three levels of Tackers confidently.
Tackers programs are limited to 24 kids in Level 1 and only 12 kids in Level’s 2 & 3 – this means places fill quickly. We endeavour to set our course dates well in advance so parents can book their children in early so as to avoid disappointment.

At NCYC, all three levels of the Tackers program now runs for a minimum of 22.5 hours each whether they are Term programs or school holiday courses. Our Tackers 1 courses are discounted to $290 per student and our Tackers 2 & 3 courses are $300 per student (as the kids move on to sailing a boat by themselves).

The NSW Government is helping kids get active with the new Active Kids program and Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is an approved provider. From 31 January 2018, parents, guardians and carers can apply for two $100 vouchers per calendar year for each school-enrolled child. Apply for your voucher online here with Service NSW. A Service NSW condition for the redemption of the vouchers is that the program must be at least 8-weeks duration – therefore we can accept them for our Term-based programs but not the 4-5 day holiday programs.
The 16-digit voucher number will need to be submitted at the time of registration. You must also please use the discount code activekids when registering to deduct the $100.
